The Power of Forgiveness

Friday, November 6, 2009, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Simi Valley UCC, 370 Royal Ave., Simi Valley

Dr. Dodge, Board Member of Beyond War, will introduce the short video, “Building a World Beyond War: A Roadmap for Citizens” which presents a dynamic overview of Beyond War's transformational ideas.  It inspires us to look more deeply at shared assumptions that must shift in order for us to accept differences and adopt practical, non-violent alternatives to war.
A screening of “The Power of Forgiveness” will follow. “The Power of Forgiveness” exemplifies one of the guiding principles of Beyond War: The means are the ends in the making. The film explores recent research into the psychological and physical effects of forgiveness on individuals and within relationships under a wide variety of conditions. This includes feature stories on the Amish, the 9/11 tragedy and peace-building in Northern Ireland, along with interviews with renowned Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, best-selling authors Thomas Moore and Marianne Williamson and others. Through character-driven stories the film shows the role forgiveness can play in alleviating anger and grief and the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that come with it.

"By its existence, the Peace Movement denies that governments know best; it stands for a different order of priorities: the human race comes first."
