Commemoration and vigil on the 65th Anniversary of the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Sunday, August 8 at 3:00 p.m.
The Peace Garden in Ventura&amp;#39;s Plaza Park
(Downtown Ventura on Santa Clara between Chestnut and Fir)

Every year Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions holds a public vigil and commemoration of the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. August 6th and 9th mark the 65th anniversary of the use of nuclear weapons against a civilian population in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since its inception in 2002, CPR has advocated the abolition of nuclear weapons worldwide.

In 2008, we began a tradition of holding our vigil at the Peace Pole and Garden of Plaza Park. The Peace Pole Project, headquartered at the UN, was started in Japan by the World Peace Prayer Society in 1955. Since then, 200,000 peace poles have been placed in 180 countries. Peace Poles are located at the United Nations Building and numerous schools, universities, churches, temples and homes throughout the world. Our Ventura Peace Pole is inscribed May Peace Prevail on Earth in 8 languages: English, Chumash, Spanish, Japanese, Perisan, Arabic, Vietnamese and Hindi.

			<title>Countdown to Zero</title>
			<link>http://www.c-p-r.net/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=68</link>
<description>Countdown to Zero was originally scheduled to open in Ventura on Friday, August 13. The distributor has decided not to open on this date. We will update as soon as we have any more information.

Countdown to Zero is a film which traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the current state of global affairs. The film exposes the close calls we have had with nuclear accidents and the current dangers associated with nuclear weapons. The conclusion is reached that the only safe number of nuclear weapons on this planet is zero.

The film premiered in Hollywood on Friday, July 30. After the 7:30 showing at the Arclight in Hollywood, Dr. Dodge, representing Physicians for Social Responsibility, appeared on a panel to discuss the film. The othere palenlists included the director, Lucy Walker, the producer, Lawrence Bender and Joseph Cirincione of the Ploughshares Fund. Physicians for Social Responsibility have long advocated the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Prior to his appearance on the panel, Dr. Dodge
appeared in Hollywood to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons and to respond to the Operation Golden Phoenix drill in Los Angeles. Operation Golden Phoenix took place on Wednesday, July 28. The purpose of the exercise was to explore the emergency response and management following the detonation of an improvised nuclear device of 10 kilotons in the Los Angeles area. It was the largest disaster drill ever held, involving 280 agencies.
The position of Physicans for Social Responsibility is that there is no meaningful medical response to such an event, and so it must be prevented.
Dr. Dodge&amp;#39;s remarks follow the performance art of the Countdown Flash Mob (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qk4B2iSLiY).

<title>Dr. Dodge at the NPT Review Conference</title>
			<link>http://www.c-p-r.net/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=61</link>
<description>Dr. Dodge attended the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty Review Conference at the United Nations. He served on the U.S. Delegation as a representative of Physicians for Social Responsibility. The NPT was
put into effect in 1970. It is considered to be the cornerstone
international treaty pertaining to nuclear weapons control and
disarmament. The Treaty has been ratified by 190 countries. The
NPT stipulates that parties meet every five years to review the Treaty . The
purpose of these conferences is to promote implementation, enhancement
and strengthen the Treaty and it&amp;#39;s pillars. This year&amp;#39;s
conference comes at an historic time in the nuclear age. Never before
has there been the intensity of effort and will to work toward
realization of the Treaty goals. Organizations that have worked for
this goal for decades are now being joined by policy wonks and leaders
the world over as all realize that there is no survival in the real
sense of nuclear war or attack and that prevention and disarmament are
the only solution. As PSR says: Prevent what we can not cure .

To read the article about Dr. Dodge in the Ventura County Star, go to: http://www.bobdodge.blogspot.com/ (http://www.bobdodge.blogspot.com/)

Dr. Dodge reported on his experiences at the conference at our June meeting.

June was also Torture Awareness Month. June 26 is United Nations International
Day in Support of Victims of Torture. We also
screened the short film Ending US-Sponsored Torture Forever , produced by the
National Religious Campaign Against Torture.
